Unfortunately, most supermarket shelves are now dominated by the products churned out by factory farms, monocrop megafarms, and industrial “food” processors. Buying from local farmers often happens through CSA programs. With a CSA program, you purchase a share from a local farmer and in return the farmer provides a box of seasonal produce each week. Farmers limit the number of shares to ensure that each member receives their allotted amount. In addition to fresh produce, some CSA programs offer meats, eggs, and other value-added products.
