Beyond Factory Farming (BFF)

Beyond Factory Farming is a national organization promoting socially responsible livestock production in Canada. The organization helps communities that are dealing with problems caused by factory farms and factory farm proposals. As an alternative to industrial livestock operations, Beyond Factory Farming promotes livestock production that is safe, fair, and healthy for the environment, farmers, workers, animals, neighbors, communities, and consumers. Establishing socially responsible livestock production is a means to reach the overarching goal of food sovereignty – democratic citizen control of our food and agriculture system.

Beyond Factory Farming works with local groups, producers, consumers, and Canadians to reclaim their food system and develop local markets as it pertains to meat production. The organization raises awareness among Canadians that choosing to buy local meat directly from a producer and making other changes in your diet that benefit your health, the environment, and your community contributes to a growing trend of conscientious eating that is changing the way we think about food.

Conscientious eating means thinking about where your food comes from, what impact it has environmentally, socially, economically, and personally (in terms of health, culture, and enjoyment). It means that if you choose to eat meat, you consider how the livestock were raised, and how far they traveled to reach your dinner plate.

Food Secure Canada (FSC)

FSC aims to unite people and organizations working for food security nationally and globally. The organization is a registered nonprofit society with a wide membership, which includes local and national organizations and unaffiliated individuals. FSC works to achieve these goals:

Zero hunger
A sustainable food system
Healthy and safe food

National Farmers Union (NFU)

Promotes rural economic and cooperative development by supporting existing agricultural co-ops and helping form new farmer co-ops and other rural businesses. The primary objective is to help family farmers and ranchers add value to the food, fiber, and energy they produce. NFU assists producers to retain ownership of their commodity further into the processing channel and enhance market returns on their investment.

Canadian Organic Growers (COG)

COG is a national charitable organization with members in all regions of Canada. Its members believe that organic food production is the best choice for the health of consumers and producers, for the protection and enhancement of the environment, and for the sustainability of the food production system. Its mission is to lead local and national communities towards sustainable organic stewardship of land, food, and fiber while respecting nature, upholding social justice, and protecting natural resources.

Canadian Coalition for Farm Animals (CCFA)

CCFA is dedicated to promoting the welfare of animals raised for food in Canada through public education, legislative change, and consumer choice. CCFA supporters are animal protection organizations across Canada. The goals of the CCFA are:

To educate Canadians about the realities of factory farming and its impact on animals
To promote more humane consumer choices
To achieve a legislated ban on battery cages and sow stalls in Canada, and revised transport regulations in keeping with more humane standards

British Columbia Food Systems Network (BCFSN)

The BCFSN is a nonprofit organization whose membership is open to anyone who supports the mission to work together to eliminate hunger and create food security for all residents of British Columbia.

Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario (EFAO)

The EFAO was established in 1970 with the purpose:

To develop and provide programs promoting the practice and advancement of ecological agriculture which maintains and enhances the health of the soil, water, crops, livestock, and the diversity of the environment
To educate and increase the public’s understanding of ecological agricultural methods like soil tillage, green manures, cover crops, composting, crop rotations, soil erosion control, and conservation practices by offering courses, seminars, conferences, farm tours, and meetings, publishing a newsletter, and by collecting, researching, and disseminating information on this topic to the general public
To bring together people who are concerned about ecological agriculture so they can share experiences, support each other and create community

Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN)

CBAN’s mission is to promote food sovereignty and democratic decision making on science and technology issues in order to protect the integrity of the environment, health, food, and the livelihoods of people in Canada and around the world by facilitating, informing, and organizing civil society action, researching, and providing information to government for policy development.

To achieve this CBAN works to:

Facilitate collaborative campaigning at the local, regional, national, and international levels
Enable individual Canadians to take strategic and effective action
Research and monitor new technologies and provide credible information
Challenge government to transparency, accountability, and democratic process
