2017 Factory Farm Summit

Throughout rural America, factory farms are expanding at an unprecedented rate. As a direct result, the air in rural communities is increasingly polluted, local waterways and wells are fouled, and farmers and rural residents are finding themselves in a position of fighting for their homes, their businesses, and rural quality of life. This fall, citizens from across the country who are on the frontlines of factory farm expansion are invited to Ocean City, Maryland, for the 2017 Factory Farm Summit – Demanding Accountability in Animal Agriculture.

This four-day conference will bring together leading experts on factory farming issues to work directly with those who are most impacted. The event will be an opportunity to network, workshop, and learn new ways to stop the expansion of factory farms and hold bad-actor operations accountable for their pollution.

We are pleased to announce that authors Maryn McKenna and Christopher Leonard will be joining an impressive list of experts for the conference. View the Summit Schedule here, but check back frequently since we’re continuing to finalize speakers and special guests.

Accommodations: This year’s summit will be held at the Clarion Resort Fontainebleau, located at 10100 Coastal Highway in Ocean City, MD 21842. Rooms for the Factory Farm Summit are a group rate of $75/night. For booking click here or call 1-800-638-2100 and be sure to tell them you are with the Factory Farm Summit.

Travel to the Summit: The closest airport to the Summit is the Salisbury-Ocean City – Wicomico Regional Airport. It is located at 5485 Airport Terminal Rd a, Salisbury, MD 21804, which is roughly 40 minutes from Ocean City and costs about $40 to take a taxi from the airport to downtown Ocean City. (If there is enough interest, we might be able to arrange carpool pick ups and drop offs. Please contact Katie Engelman for more information.) Flying into Baltimore or Washington may provide more options for flights, times, and prices, but keep in mind that both cities are about three-hours drive time away.  Information on taking the shuttle, train and bus can be found here.

There is no shuttle to and from the Salisbury airport to the summit hotel. It is recommended that you book a cab or schedule a Lyft or Uber in advance. Lyft and Uber do operate in this area and it is recommended that you schedule a ride multiple days in advance from the app to have a driver come pick you up. It is not recommended that you order a Lyft or Uber upon arrival to the Salisbury airport or when leaving upon hotel check-out as some drivers do not want to drive that far.

Scholarships: We will have a limited number of travel scholarships for farmers and for residents of impacted communities. The scholarships are competitive. If you are interested in applying for a scholarship to the summit, please fill out the scholarship form here.
